Pond Line: catch fish on the way up, then choose an upgrade
Coming back with an empty hook in Pond Line? Learn when fish can be caught, how to steer a first cast and what the three starting upgrades change.

An empty first cast in Pond Line usually calls for a change in steering, not a new rod. Fish are caught on the way up. Let the hook descend, move it toward a visible school, then keep it in the fish’s path as it rises. Leaving it in the clear middle channel can bring it home empty.
The starting line reaches the Shallows, and the creel holds three fish. That is enough to earn your first upgrade without reaching a deeper band.
Move toward a school before the hook rises
Press Cast line. On desktop, move the pointer left or right over the pond to guide the hook. Arrow keys, A/D and the on-screen arrows are alternatives; touch controls use a drag across the pond. Moving vertically does not set the hook’s depth.
For a first attempt:
- Look for a school to either side of the central line. Move the hook toward it while descending.
- Let the line reach its limit and turn upward automatically. Passing a fish on the descent does not catch it.
- As the hook rises, adjust left or right to meet the fish. Watch the creel counter for confirmation.
- Let the hook return to the jetty. The receipt shows the fish sold and the coins earned.
In our checked opening cast, guiding the hook into the left school filled all three slots and earned 12 coins. An unsteered opening cast earned zero. The left side is a worked example, not a guaranteed route: another cast using the same pointer position caught only two fish. Watch where the fish are now rather than treating one position as an automatic payout.
A full creel reels in faster and cannot take another fish. If the counter is already 3/3, there is no need to chase the next school on that cast.
Use Reel now to turn early, not to catch
Reel now changes a descending hook into a rising one. It does not pull a fish onto the hook, and it does not instantly sell the basket. You still need to steer on the return trip.
For your first Shallows cast, letting the line reach its limit gives you a simple starting routine. Later, you can turn early if you want to fish a shallower part of the pond instead of using the whole line. In our upgraded cast, pressing Reel now in the Reeds started the return before the line reached its new limit.
Use Pause, or P/Escape, if you need time away. The pause menu’s Resume continues the cast. Recast and Jetty are different actions: they ask for confirmation before leaving an active attempt.
Buy room for fish or access to a new band
Open Shop after the receipt. The three tracks solve different problems:
- Bigger creel, initially 12 coins, raises capacity from three fish to four. Consider it when you are filling the basket before passing the fish you want.
- Longer line, initially 18 coins, reaches the Reeds. Choose it when you want to start finding species beyond the Shallows.
- Better market, initially 16 coins, raises catch prices from 100% to 125%. It increases the value of fish you land, not the number you can carry or the depth you can reach.
We bought Longer line from a balance of 45 coins. The balance fell to 27, the band changed to Reeds and the next line upgrade cost 72. Buying Bigger creel then left 15 coins and changed capacity to four. This demonstrates both purchases, not a fastest-upgrade strategy. You can buy the creel earlier if carrying more fish is your priority.
The longer-term collection has twenty species across five bands. A useful next challenge is to land a new Reeds species rather than buying upgrades without checking the fish book.
Finish a cast before leaving if you want its earnings. Pond Line keeps completed progress in this browser and has no offline income. For a collection you want to retain, avoid relying on a private browsing session: MDN documents that its local storage is cleared when the last private tab closes. Our browser-save guide explains the wider limits.
